Initially a cricket club called The Wednesday Cricket Club, formed in 1820, The Wednesday was established in 1867 as a football side essentially to keep the cricketers fit during winter months. Runners-up in the F.A. Cup in 1890, The Wednesday were invited to join the First Division in 1892. The club changed to its present name in 1929. Founder members of the Premier League, Wednesday played in the Championship until 2020-21, dropping to League One, and returning to that level in 2022-23 where they currently compete.
