One of the most successful clubs in the early history of the Football League, Sunderland AFC was formed in 1879. The club was elected to the Football League in 1890, remaining in the top league for fifty-seven consecutive seasons, a record bettered only by Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool. Sunderland won promotion back to Top Flight in 2007 and after appearing to have consolidated the side for a prolonged stay, went down to the Championship in 2016-17, going further down at the end of 2017-18. After four seasons at the third tier, Sunderland returned to the Championship through the play-offs in 2021-22.
