Founded as St. Luke’s in 1877, Wolverhampton Wanderers are founder members of the Football League. St Luke’s merged with the local cricket and football team, the Blakenhall Wanderers in 1879 and became Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club enjoyed a unique purple patch on either side of the Second World War and during the late fifties, winning the league title in two consecutive seasons but fortunes slipped during recent history.
Wolverhampton Wanderers returned to the Premier League at the end of the 2008-09 season but although their previous three spells were one season comebacks, they lasted three seasons before dropping down and then getting demoted immediately to the third tier of English football. Wolves returned to the Championship after gaining immediate promotion in 2013-14 and ultimately won promotion back to Top Flight at the end of 2017-18 where they are currently enjoying a sustained stay. The very first penalty kick in England was taken by a Wolves player, John Heath, while playing at home against Accrington Stanley on September 14, 1891.
